Edward Shippen was born in March 1639 at Yorkshire, England.¹ He was the son of William Shippen.¹ Edward Shippen married Elizabeth Lybrand in 1671.¹ Edward Shippen died on 2 October 1712 at age 73. In the pedigree chart he lists 2 Oct 1712. In the text he lists 1713.¹ His two elder brothers died leaving their estates to him and in 1668 he immigrated to Boston. Here, in 1671, he married his second wife, Elizabeth Lybrand. Later he moved to Philadelphia to escape persecution as a Quaker. In 1695 he was Speaker of the Assembly, in 1701 the first Mayor of Philadelphia and in 1702 and again in 1704 President of the Governors Council. Late in life he married for the third time.¹
