     George Amy Stanton was born on 8 March 1850 at Delaware Co., NY.. He was the son of Daniel Cookingham Stanton and Amelia Eliza Van Steenburg. George Amy Stanton married Ida May Colehour on 20 September 1876 at Mt. Carroll, IL.
     He was a poor boy with few early educational advantages. When five years old his parents moved to Kankakee county, Illinois where he lived until manhood. Through the influence of a family for whom he worked in 1869-70 he was converted 20 Aug. 1870 and joined the M. E. Church. He immediately started a neighborhood prayer meeting and before Spring his mother, three sisters, a brother, and several friends were converted. In the spring of 1871 he attended school in Kankakee City, and in the Spring of 1872 entered the Theological School at Evanston, Illinois to prepare for the ministry. In the Winter of 1874-5 he was obliged to give up his studies on account of poor health. During his vacations and after he left school, he did considerable canvassing with Bible Histories in Illinois and Canada. In the Fall of 1876 while this engaged in Carroll County, Illinois he married. His home was then in Mt. Carroll, Illinois until 1882 when he moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa. There he was in real estate and nursery business for a time and then in the furniture and musical instrument business. Business reverses and disappointments had a bad effect upon his religion and from 1886 to 1889 he had no church relations. In 1888 he returned to Illinois, first to Rockford and then to Mt. Carroll where he engaged in the music business. In November of 1889 he again joined the M. E. Church. Mr. Stanton was always a strictly temperate man, and never used tobacco or intoxcants at all, nor ever engaged in any games of chance.
