John Hosie was born on 2 June 1812 at Stirlingshire, Scotland.. He was the son of James Hosie and Jane (?). John Hosie married Julia Beattys, daughter of Philander Beattys and Louisa Stanton, on 12 November 1845. John Hosie died on 11 May 1881 at Scranton, PA.
He emigrated about 1826. He was interested in the coal miningbusiness in north-eastern Pennsylvania. In January 1846 he was buried forty-eight hours in a mine a Carbondale, Pennsylvania with twelve others. Forty acres of earth caved in, and he alone escaped, digging out with his hands.
