     Of Sterling, Mass. He was one of the most prominent clergymen in Mass. A graduate of Harvard in 1741. He became the first pastor of the church (Congregational) in Sterling, formerly the West Parish in Lancaster, 19 Dec. 1744, and was dismissed 14 Nov. 1774, charged with being a Tory, and considered an enemy to civil and ecclesiastical liberty, after a pastorate of thirty years he was driven by violence from the pulpit. For ten years he continued to preach in his own home and the school-house, after which he removed from town. He was then pastor for twenty-one years at Hanover, Plymouth Co. Retiring from active work in Feb., 1805, he went to Reading.

     He resided at Gorton, Conn. "The baptismal record of Thomas' children is irregular and incomplete; there is no baptismal record of a son John, but my belief is based upon these reasons. The date of his birth was certainly not later than 1682 since he married in 1702. No grandson of Thomas' was old enough to have a son in 1682. Therefore I argue that John was himself a grandson. Now our records are accurate of all the grandchildren of Thomas' except those through the son Thomas where there has been a confessed difficulty and lack of records. If John was a descendant of Thomas, he was a grandson; if a grandson, it must have been through Thomas. Is not the way he names his children significant? His first one was for his wife, his second for him, his third for - was it not for his father? Until there is proof for this sonship, however, that cannot be disputed, I place this record in the appendix." --William Stanton.¹
