Mary A. Rice was born.. She was the daughter of Allen Rice and Hannah Stanton.1
Who was the mother of Mary A. Rice? Here are Karla Moore's conclusions. My handwritten family records say my ancestor is Mary A. Rice-Hibbard, and I can confirm my lineage up to her. Mary's mother is Hannah Stanton-Rice, but I cannot find a single document that serves as proof. I have spent over three years (2009) on the Hannah/Mary link and I constantly uncover missing or incorrect records in Wisconsin. I have census records showing she and her family moved to Wisconsin in the 1840's. I have death records for two of the children saying they were born in Onondaga County, NY, and parents are listed as Allen Rice and Hannah; they even list Hannah's maiden name was Stanton. There is no doubt this is the Hannah Stanton who married Allen Rice as listed in all the genealogical books. The grave next to Allen Rice in the Evergreen Quarterline Cemetery has lost its marker. Cemetery records show no name but state the person died September 19, 1881. I assume this is Hannah, but I cannot prove it. There is more circumstantial evidence; Allen Rice's obituary says he left behind "an aged widow," so she was still alive in 1875. Hannah appears on the 1880 census as a widow living with one of her daughters. There is no death record on file with the county or state, and I have not been able to find an obituary for her.1
