     Cynthia was born at Woodstock, Ny, on 28 October 1820.1 She was the daughter of Oliver Stanton and Rhoda Underwood. She married Benjamin Ward Baum at Delphi, Onondaga Co., Ny, on 10 March 1842. Cynthia died in 1905.1
     As of 10 March 1842,her married name was Baum. She resided at Syracuse, Onondaga, NY, in 1891. "The Thomas Stanton Society Newsletter", Number 13, August 2001 in an article entitled CYNTHIA STANTON. GRANDMOTHER OF WIZARD OF OZ states: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. published in 1900 remains the most significant childrens' book in American history. It is a beloved fantasy. imitated. interpreted. adapted and marketed. It amazes me to see my great grandchildren go "bonkers" over it. just as my children did long ago.

There is a special family pleasure in knowing the background of The Wizard for it was written by Lvman Frank Baum. 7th of 8 children born to Cynthia Stanton. Cynthia was born Oct. 28. 1820 in Woodstock. N.Y. and married to Benjamin Baum. She was a direct descendant of Thomas Stanton ( Oliver 6th, Robert 5th, Joshua 4th, William 3rd, Thomas 2nd, Thomas Ist.). As the mother of Frank. she became the grandmother of the Wizard of Oz, Neilther she nor Frank would ever know the significance of this relation.      

Cynthia was forever concerned with this small. thin boy. born with a defective heart. The family moved to Mattvdale where Cynthia raised her family in a rose-covered farm estate called Rose Lawn. Frank was sent to the Peekskill Military Academy where he suffered a heart attack and returned home. It was the beginning of a long series of failures that would plague him all his life. Cynthia's husband Ben grew wealthy in the banking and oil business. Frank's brothers joined the firm one-by-one while Frank stayed home, bored and forever searching for the right career. Cynthia Stanton whom we have called the grandmother of the Wizard. died in 1905. She was able to see her sickly failure-prone son's work as he became successful.

     Robert was born at Belchertown, Mass. He was the son of Randall Stanton and Clarissa Spicer. He married Harriet Jones at Southington, Conn, on 17 January 1848.
     He resided at Norwich, Conn., in 1891. He was a congregational clergyman. By 1888 he was retired from the pastorate but did considerable supplying in neighboring towns. He is an alumnus of Yale College, Class 1843; and of Yale Theological Seminary, Class 1847. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Albany as pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Cohoes, N.Y., 9 Feb, 1848. In 1853 he became pastor of the Congregational Church at Derby, Conn. In 1856 he was installed pastor of the Greenville Congregational Church of Norwich, Conn., which position he held until 1830, when he resigned, but continued to live in Norwich.

     He resided at Ormond, Volusia Co., Florida, in 188. He resided at Copenhagen, Lewis Co., Ny, in 1879. He was a sailor until he was 23 years old. A few years after his marriage he entered the ministry of the M.E. Church and was in 1887 pastor at Cayuga, NY. When he retired, he bought an orange grove in Florida and took all his family, except for the oldest Celia who was married. So most of his descendants are in Florida.
