William Stanton1

M, b. 5 April 1867, d. 20 March 1954
William Stanton was born on 5 April 1867 at Portage, Livingston Co., NY..2 He was the son of Lyman Stanton and Frances Wilson.1 William Stanton married Bertha M. Taylor, daughter of William H. Taylor Taylor and Eliza VanValkenberg, on 4 September 1890.1 William Stanton died on 20 March 1954 at Machias, Cattaraugus Co., NY.1 He was buried at Webster Rural Cemetery, Webster, Monroe Co., NY.1
BIOGRAPHY:William, M.D. b. Apr. 5, 1867 at Portage, N.Y. It seems that at birth he was named Wilson,
but it was written William on all school and college records. The estrangement between the Wilson and
Stanton families was no doubt the cause of his never knowing of the mistake until middle life. He
attended High school at Belfast, N.Y. and Medical College at Buffalo, N.Y., receiving the degree of M.D.
from the University of Buffalo in the class of 1889. He began practice in Rochester, N.Y. m. Bertha M.
Baker, adopted dau. Of Wm. Baker of Darien, N.Y. on Sept. 4, 1890. She was dau. Of William H. Taylor
who was a harness maker at Baldwinsville, N.Y. where she was b. Dec. 22, 1866. Her mother was Eliza,
dau. Of Lucas VanValkenberg. Soon after his marriage he contracted scarlet fever from a patient, which
so broke his health that he was advised to go to the country to regain his strength, and in Jan. 1897 he
moved to Sandusky, N.Y. where he practiced until July 1892, and moved to Varysburg, N.Y. where their
children Florence, Lyman, and Roland were born. For eight years he practiced there and served as
County Physician of Wyoming County. He served one year as President of the Wyoming Co. Medical
Society. In 1900 he moved to Webster, N.Y. where their third son, Bruce, was born. Here he enjoyed a
liberal degree of success in his profession. In 1911-1912 he built a fine residence and office at the corner
of Main St. and Dunning Ave. For many years he was prominent in the affairs of the community, holding
many positions of responsibility. He lectured at the Park Avenue Hospital Nurses? Training School, was
Secy of the Lake Shore Medical Society, Treas. Of the Central N.Y. Medical Soc., was member of his
County, State, and National Medical Societies, and Clerk of the Webster Baptist Church. He was an
enthusiastic Mason, and served his Lodge as Master, his Chapter as High Priest, and his Grand Chapter
as representative to the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Canada. He retired from private practice and
enlisted in the U.S. Army, being commissioned as Captain in the Medical Reserve Corp. June 28, 1917
and ordered to active duty at Fort Slocum N.Y. Sept. 8, 1917. This being a Recruit Station, he was
assigned to examining nose, throat and ears of the recruits, and examined more than 73,000 men for the
U.S. Army. He was promoted to Major Apr. 29, 1918 and made Chief of Staff, in charge of medical work
at the Post Hospital, and during the following winter more than 2000 cases of influenza and over 300
cases of pneumonia were treated in the hospital. He was discharged Apr. 21, 1919, and was recommissioned
as Major in the Medical Reserve Corp. in June, 1919. In June, 1923 he was promoted to
Lt. Col. In the same Corp. In June, 1927 he declined a re-commission. July 1, 1919 he accepted a
position on the Faculty of the Frontier Asthma Co., and sold his Webster home and moved to Buffalo, N.
Y. After moving to Buffalo, he became interested in the Boy Scout Troop of his Church, and served as Scoutmaster of Troop 110 for ten years, he then gave way for a younger man, but continued active as
Chairman of the Troop Comm. For fifteen years more, and during his connection with the Troop, 36
Scouts attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He resigned his position with the Frontier Co. on reaching his
80th birthday in Apr. 1947, and moved to Machias, N.Y. to be near their dau. Mrs. Walter N. Knight who
lived there. In 1948 he built a small but comfortable and convenient house on Maple Ave., Machias, N.Y.
where he and his wife lived in fair health. His hobby for many years was Stamp collecting. William died
Mar. 20, 1954 and Bertha d. July 25, 1957.1 He lived in 1892 at Rochester, Monroe Co., NY.3 He and Bertha M. Taylor lived in 1935 at Buffalo, Erie Co., NY.4 William Stanton and Bertha M.
