Judge Joshua Stanton

M, b. 1740, d. after 1803
     Joshua was born at Preston, New London, CT, in 1740. He was the son of Elijah Stanton and Eliza Whiting. He married an unknown person . Joshua died after 1803 at Salisbury, Conn. His body was interred after 1803 at Salisbury, Conn, at Center Burying Ground.
     He resided at Colchester, Vt, in 1774. Admninistered his father's estate at Pittsfield, MA, in 1763. On March 18, 1793, he was the moderator of the first town meeting for organizing the town. He was elected its first representative in 1793, and re-elected in 1795, 1800, 1803. He also served the town as selectman and treasurer. For three years he was the chief judge of Chittenden county. He was one of the founders of the University of Vermont. He built the Penniman House, and in 1795 built grist-mills in Westford. In 1781, the charter of Wolcott was granted to Joshua Stanton and 61 others.
