Daniel Davison

M, b. 8 April 1639
Daniel was born on 8 April 1639. The ancestry of Daniel is often incorrectly reported. He was not the son of Nicholas Davison and Joanna Hodges. A. H. Davison the early (1920) compiler of the Davison family initially repeated the Daniel-Nicholas connection but later revised his conclusion.

This is an excerpt from A. H. Davison's papers (supplied by Bill Collins): "Daniel Davison, the emigrant ancestor of the most numerous family of Davisons of America (and possibly of the world), of his period, has failed to leave of record a single word as to his ancestry. We are compelled to rely on circumstantial evidence in some instances. The early historians of the Massachusetts Bay Colonies, all seem to have accepted a mistake made by Farmer in his "First Settlers of Massachusetts" (p. 80, 1829 ed.) '"Daniel Davison, Ipswich, 1665 removed from Newbury, and was a man of note there, a major of the Essex regiment: member of the Artillery Co., 1672: He had a number of children." Felt accepted and repeated the substance of the statement: Savage in his Genealogical dictionary, "thought probable," as did every early historian who had occasion to mention Daniel Davison of Newbury (b. 1651), son of Nicholas Davison of Charlestown. Prior to the publication of the Cole's Davison genealogy, 1899, the compiler of this genealogy had traced to the third generation the descendants of Daniel Davison of Newbury, fully establishing the fact that Daniel of Ipswich was not a descendant of Nicholas Davison (1611)." Mr. Cole was advised of the facts, but chose to do what might greatly embarrass those who in personal sketches of their ancestry have copied this misleading work.

In 1666, Ipswich, Mass., prepared an address or petition expressive of the loyal disposition of the Ipswich Settlement to the British Crown, urging the Genral Court that "seasonable application bee made to his Majtie by meet persons, chosen & Sent for that end to clearer orselves and or actings from any such construction &c." This petition was signed by seventy-three persons of Ipswich, among whom were Danl Davison, Thomas Low and their neighbors. (Waters' Hist of Ipswich, vol. 1, p. 139; also Mass. Hist Coll. 2d series, vol. VIII, p. 107).

It is conceived that this act of joining in this petition by Daniel Davison of Ipswich attracted the attention of John Farmer and caused him in his "Register of First Settlers" to locate Daniel Davison, later of Newbury, first at Ipswich. From this error has followed the publishing as descendants of the Newbury Daniel, the numerous descendants of Daniel Davison of Ipswich: Daniel Davison, then of Charlestown, and later of Newbury, was at the date of the signing this historic paper, a youth of the age of fourteen years. There is no suggestion, other than that both lines used the name "Daniel" of near relationship. The methods of the two men, in the affairs of life were vey dissimilar.

Daniel Davison was an industrious husbandman, beginning evidently, without capital, as is disclosed in 1661, in the probate of the will of Daniel Ringe, as "in possession of a farm" of one hundred ten acreas. He was not a freeman, or commoner. Prior to 1662, freemen required to be members of a Protestant church, and strictly speaking was one who had never belonged to another, and by the vicissitudes of war, he had for a short period been the owned servant of another, by the ordinance of Cromwell's Parliament, to the extent of the repayment of the cost of his exile to Massachusetts Bay Colony.

A. H. Davison, in a letter to Ida Mae (Davison) Bonner in 1923 wrote that Daniel's birthdate was 1630. He did not cite his source..1,2 He married Margaret Low at Ipswich (Hamilton), Massachusetts, on 13 April 1657.1,2,3 His body was interred at Congregational Cemetery.
Daniel was a member at Wenham, MA, on 5 January 1674 of the Wenham Meeting House.. He left a will on 5 December 1693. He was born 1630 in Scotland and was exiled to the Massachusetts Bay Colony as a prisoner of war having been a soldier in the Covenanter Army of Scotland. He landed in Ipswich in 1651.

On 13 Sep 1666 he signed a loyalist petition. He served as a Major of the Essex Regiment and a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Co. in 1672.
