Lucien was honored on 28 October 1936.1 His early years were spent on the family farm, and he recalled being frightened when, as a child, he had to lead cattle home after dark.
Lucien had been a lifelong Episcopalian, but in Corning he attended the First Presbyerian Church, where his lifelong friend, Dotor Elmer J. Stuary was pastor. A lanky, incredibly tall Scotsman, Doctor Stuart was a local landmark. He liked to surpsie a parishioner kneeling to arrange his store window, when he would announce, through the glass, "That's the first time I've seen you on our knees in a long while." Lucien was a lifelong member of the Republican Party, which had been dominat in national politics since the Civil War. (The only two Democratic presidents in Lucien's and Emily's lives had been Grover Cleveland, whise picture was in Lucien's West Point yearbook as commander-in-chief, and Woodrow Wilson, the commander-in-chief when he had fought in France.) Lucien read The Corning Evening Leader on weekdays, but on Sundays he read the New York HEarld Tribune, then the leading Republican paper in the region. However, in 1932 he is said to have voted for Franklin D. Roosevelt because he felt that only a change could bring the nation out of the great depression. A keen student of military strategy, he predicted that considering the vindictive terms of the peace that had been forced on Germany at the end of the World War, that there would be another was in twenty years, only one year off the event. He also is said to have believed that George B. McClellan was the greatest Union General of the Civil War, which, though not urrently a fashionable view, is one for which there is some basis.
Lucien was one of Corning's leading citizens and when he was not about town, he spent many hours in his office, with maps and colored pins, reenacting battles as he smoked his Muriel (strong) cigarettes Along with an oak desk and a piano, the office contained a displapy cas with many souvenirs, including an ancient cannnon ball from the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British, which had inspired the poen by Francis Scott Key that was laters set to music as "The Star Spangeled Banner,", and a gift made by an old soldier who had served with Lucien, a sizeable carved mule harnessed with a miniature pack artillery outfit that the soldier had made for him. In the third floor storage room, there was a Filipino straw shield with captured weapons affixed to it. From time to time, old army acquaintances, including enlisted men who had served with him, stopped by to pay their respects and to reminisce with him. In the evenings, Lucien and Emily often played cards by the fireplace. At intervals, Emily would accuse Lucien vehemently of cheating, a complaint that he suffered philosophically but with a twinkle in his eyes.
Lucien long drove an ancient Nash built in the 1920s which, it is said, he handed as though it were a horse. A story that may be apocryphal has it that once, going down steep Pearl Street, he tried to dlow the car by pulling back on the reins, succeeding in extracting the steering wheel from the steering column. Before his death, he bought a 1936 Ford. Emily never drove an automobile.
Once he sat inthe living room lighting cigarette after cigarette with exploding matches, insinuated by one of the children, losing himself in conversation and forgetting about the peril each time. Each time his dog fled in panic.
He and his wifewere an unusual-looking pair, she four feet eleven inches in height, he an even six feet, and both wearing pince-nez glasses which when not in use, hung from their necks by ribbons. Even though Lucien liked to provoke Emily into a foot-stomping reaction, they were a loving couple who completed long lives with dignity and grace and left behind a family for whom they were legends.
For all of her petite size, Emily was a capable, strong, courageous, and of remarkable endurance. Family life for her was a panoply of wlecomes and departures, some routine, others unexpected, and relcations and reformations of her home. She accepted her role as a military wife and performed it masterfully.
Lucien's was the great American success story, the modest boy who, by intelligence, assiduity, fortitude, and service to his country rose to prominence. He was a stern man, but a gentle one with a sly sense of humor. A man of great personal honor and fairness, and he never compromised his personal integrity. Together the two represented the very best of the America of their time.
