Genealogical Computing says this is the software that sets the standard. Download the demo (file name r4demo.zip, size: 261681, created: 11-24-93) and take a look at the Individual Entry Screen. Commsoft continues to set the pace with the just released Roots IV Version 1.2. With this release you can create your very own home page from a Roots IV database - complete with indexes and sources! The release includes a spell checker, new indexing and printing facilities, the ability to print Family Group Sheets with footnotes, and more. Check out the details of the V1.2 upgrade. Running Roots IV under Win95 from Troy Engel, Commsoft Technical Support.
In the CONFIG.SYS you need to specify FILES and BUFFERS. By default, when Win95 is installed, it removes all references. It then internally defines to the system 60 files and 30 buffers which are not enough for Roots IV (it needs at least 80 for itself). In the CONFIG.SYS file, after the HIMEM.SYS line, add:
FILESHIGH=120
BUFFERSHIGH=30
While you are there, Win95 also supports LASTDRIVEHIGH, STACKSHIGH, etc. Consult the text file in your Windows directory called CONFIG.TXT for information on how you might adjust those parms.
In the AUTOEXEC.BAT put \ROOTS4 in your path. It is not absolutely necessary, as long as you always invoke Roots4 from its home directory.
Create a shortcut to ROOTS4DX.EXE in the \ROOTS4 directory. Change these properties: SCREEN -- set to FullScreen instead of Windowed for faster operation, and MEMORY -- set XMS to 8192 and DPMI to 8192 for optimum performance. Tweaking these values may provide better operation for your particular machine/project.
