   Obtaining vital records from British Columbia, Canada

 In Canada vital statistics records are kept by the provinces.
 B.C.'s records begin in 1872; for earlier dates you'll have
 to look in church records.

 Here is their policy on obtaining birth, marriage and death
 records for genealogial purposes, quoted from a 1985 letter
 to me from a Deborah A. Munro.  I've replaced the 1985 fees
 with ellipses (...) -- the 1991 fees are below.
  "The fee for each genealogical record ... includes an initial
   3 year search period if the date of the event is unknown.
   Additional searches can be made ... for each 3 year period or
   part thereof we are required to search.  Please indicate the
   specific years you wish us to search and remit the appropriate
   funds.  Any money not required will be refunded.
   Any person may obtain a death record.  Any relative may obtain
   a marriage record if the event occurred more than 30 years ago.
   The only person who may obtain a birth record is the person
   themselves, a parent or a spouse of that person, or a son/dau-
   ghter, sister/brother."
 Fees are (as of January 1, 1991):
    search of records - each 3-year period         $17.00
    genealogical extracts                          $25.00
 (I got a grandfather's death record several years ago from
  them.  I compared notes with a friend who got a death record
  more recently and hers had a lot less information than mine
  did.  I think this is what "genealogical extracts" means --
  you don't get all the information they have in their records!)
