Public Access Library Catalogs Accessible by dial-up telephone lines and Internet IP Addresses Listed by State Compiled 27 March 1994 from various sources by George Archer Internet: garcher@bix.com PO Box 6233 CompuServe: 72530,1645 McLean, VA 22106 FidoNet: 1:109/302 On-line public access library catalogs are varied: public and unversity libraries, historical societies and private companies with database collections of library catalogs. These catalogs are available for by both direct dialing and by using Internet's telnet (remote logon) program. This listing favors the direct dial but includes the telnet and IP addresses for those with Internet access. Those marked BITNET will not be accessible directly from Internet but will be available to BITNET users. Internet addresses in lower case are not BITNET. Even for those with Internet access, a local phone call may be cheaper and easier. This list is as complete as I could make it for the moment for dial-up public access catalogs but NOT for Internet access. Internet access to Public Access Catalogs is very adequately documented by several sources available on the Internet and users can GET them by Anonymous FTP: vm1.nodak.edu: /nnews/guide1.nnews - Dana Noonan list (telnet only) /nnews/guide2.nnews - Dana Noonan list (telnet only) /genealog/lib-addr - Bibliographic databases - Billy Baron /genealog/complibs - Dial-up Listing of Libraries /genealog/interlib - Internet libraries /genealog/lconline - telnetting to LC /genealog/lib-addr - Internet Library Addresses nic.cerfnet: /internt/resources/library_catalog ariel.unm.edu: /library/internet.library - Art St. George list ftp.unt.edu (129.120.1.1): pub/library login: texas "UNT's Accessing On-line Bibliographic Databases." by Barron, Bill. dla.ucop.edu (128.48.108.25): /pub/intenet/libcat-guide - library resources by Farley hydra.uwo.ca: /libsoft Please send additions, corrections and comments to me at one of the above addresses. I am particularly interested in libraries that have collections of particular interest for genealogy, rather than general, research. DIAL-UP -- Explanation of terms for dial-up access: COVERAGE: As stated ACCESS: The local telephone number you dial to connect to the library's computer catalog. Your computer and the distant computer will negotatiate everything but the communication parameters. You may have to reset your default communications parameters on your PC terminal software BEFORE dialing up the computer catalog. Read your software documentation under the subject of "communications parameters." Some of these can be changed with an ALT or CTRL + combination and will vary from program to program. If you get garbage after loggin on, try one of the other combinations in this order: 7E1 or 8N1. Computer software often gets changed, so the parameters listed below for each library may not always be current. Normal (default) settings: 8N1 = Data bits: 8 bits; Parity: No Parity; Stop Bit: 1 Stop Bit. Alternate settings for logging onto some catalogs: 7E1 = Data bits: 7 bits; Parity: Even Parity; Stop Bit: 1 Stop Bit. 7(space)2 = Data bits: 7 bits; Parity: (space) Parity; Stop Bit: 2 Stop Bits. 7(mark)1 = Data bits: 7 bits; Parity: (mark) Parity; Stop Bit: 1 Stop Bit. Full Duplex (default) - normal setting Half Duplex - check your documentation if you are not seeing your keystrokes on the screen. Hang up: Your telecommunications program may do this automatically after you logoff the catalog. If you find that your software tells you that you are still "connected" or "off hook" use the ALT or CTRL + combination to hangup (break the telephone connection) to regain control of your computer. (Telix and ProComm use ALT-H). If you are really "hung up" that is, you cannot see any keyboard display on your screen after you log off and you can't break the connection by the above means, you might have to turn off your external modem, or (worst case) warm boot your computer. LOGON: Keyboard actions to get into the catalog SEARCH: ? means that there was no information in this source. Use on-line HELP with each system. HELP: These are voice-line telephone numbers or sources of hardcopy manuals. Emulation: PC-clone users use VT100 if asked interactively by library logon prompts. INTERNET -- If you are on Internet and are telnetting to one of the sites below, follow the on-screen instructions. If there are no instructions, try the LOGON: instructions below.
