In browsing the files there, I didn't see anything on Swiss research. A GENEALOGICAL HOW-TO FOR AMERICANS OF SWISS DESCENT The Swiss Genealogical Society (SGFF) maintains a Central Office For Genealogical Information in Zurich (Mr. Manuel Aicher, Manager, Geerenweg 19, 8303 Basserdorf). The primary task of this central office is to evaluate printed material to be used in publications on Swiss Families. In addition, it collects the names and addresses of individuals who are gathering or have gathered material on any Swiss family. The database of the Central Office is being continuously expanded. It's information is available for use by the general public. The Swiss Genealogical Society is financed only by its members and receives no outside support. What the Central Office Offers: * Bibliographic information about Swiss families. Information on individuals or groups whose members are not related to each other is not available. * Clues on unpublished materials. * Genuine genealogical information. Publications and materials covering only a few generations are not entered into the database. * Indications of material in archives that has been collected from a genealogical point of view. * Helpful hints about genealogical research problems of a general nature; no research is carried out. Problems which may be solved easily by mail may be resolved, but a fee will be charged to cover time and expenses. When making an inquiry the Central Office requested the addition of any available details on the family, particularly with regard to orgin. Each family name in Switzerland is connected to its place of origin ("Burgerort"). In the experience of the Central Office this vital information is often lost in foreign countries. Without the place of origin the Central Office will require additional time and effort to respond to the inquiry. Also, the place of origin is necessary for proper identification of the family as there are often several unrelated families with the same surname. Places of birth, baptism, marriage and death are important as well but the main civil registry is always the place of birth. What the Central Office does not provide: * True genealogical research. This may be done by a professional genealogist for a fee. * Original source materials. These must be found in a library or archive. * Documented materials. * Information on individuals. * Information on coats of arms or heraldic sources or literature. Fees: The Central Offices charges US-$20 - for persons living outside Europe. This fee if levied for any name or place of interest requested and must be paid in cash and sent with the inquiry. This sum must be paid before the information will be sent. If the information provided is extensive or requires more investigation, an additional amount will be charged. An invoice for this fee will be sent with the information. The fees cover only the time and expenses of the Central Office. Information networking: The Swiss Genealogical Society asks the everyone to whom it sends information, forward to it a copy or photocopy of any work in which the material is used whether this material is published or not. This writing will be place in the SGFF library, thus increasing the information available to others. The SFGG will pay for this copy though it would appreciate a donation. The SGFF would also appreciate knowing of unpublished materials on Swiss families (especially if the quantity of fairly large) which you might have so that it may pass this information on to others researching the same family. Neither the SGFF nor the Central Office accepts responsibility for the work of any genealogist including those listed below nor for anyy free-lance research which may be done by the manager of the Central Office.
