KLEDARAS Family

First Generation

1. Michael1 Kledaras birth date unknown.

He married Pelagia (Poligou?) ??. According to William Lingos, Michael's grandson, Michael was a grocer and had an oven for baking. He was the treasurer of the church. The Greek word kledaras is "lock" and Michael's father or an ancestor may have been a locksmith.

Michael Kledaras and Pelagia (Poligou?) ?? had the following children:

child 2 i. Mary2 ??. She married Panayiotis (Peter) Nicholas Keneklis. (See Panayiotis (Peter) Nicholas Keneklis for the continuation of this line.) Only one of her children has descendants in the U.S. She stayed in Greece.

child 3 ii. Aphrodite Kledaras. She married Peter Samaris. (See Peter Samaris for the continuation of this line.) Aphrodite was a seamtress. Her descendants live in Mytilene and Athens. After her husband's death she moved to Mytilene and lived above her son's grocery. Her niece Maria Demetriou Paspalas came to live with her and learn sewing. It was there that Maria met her future husband Alexander Artistidies Mavrogeorge.

child 4 iii. Marygo Kledaras. She married Christodoulos (Stratis) Lingos. (See Christodoulos (Stratis) Lingos for the continuation of this line.) She and her children came to the U.S. She later returned to Greece.

child 5 iv. Elena (Coukona) Kledaras. She married Stratis Plomaritis. Stratis was the son of ?? Plomaritis. (See Stratis Plomaritis for the continuation of this line.) Her descendants live in Loutra.

child 6 v. Angelica Kledaras. She married Constandino Kadjunis. (See Constandino Kadjunis for the continuation of this line.) Some of her children came to the U.S.

child 7 vi. Persephone (Karonia) Kledaras was born in Loutra, Lesvos, Greece 1860. Persephone Varkas' death certificate indicates that her father's name was Nicholas Kledaras. All other sources indicated his name was Michael Kledaras. Her death certificate also indicates she died at age 97 which would compute to a birth year of 1874. However the Loutra records indicate she was born in 1880. If the death certificate was a transcription error and should have been 91 rather than 97, there isn't any conflict. The Loutra records are considered primary. Persephone died December 22, 1951 Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH.(123) The death certificate lists as cause of death "broncopneumonia, general debility. Old Age. Has had mitral disease for years." At the time of her death she was living at 30 Ophir Street in Boston, MA. Her body was interred April 15, 1952 Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH, Pine Grove.(124) She married Demetrios Andonios Paspalas.

Demetrios was born in Loutra, Lesvos, Greece 1851.(125) His death certificate indicates his birth year was 1866. This conflicts with the birth record in Loutra. The Loutra record is considered primary. Also, the death records in Manchester NH City Hall say that he was the son of Anthony and Mary Varkas. This information is not included on the death certificate itself. Demetrios was the son of Andonios Paspalas and Maria (Elena?) ??.

Demetrios died January 19, 1922 Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH.(126) His death certificate indicates the cause of death was arterio sclerosis. The family story is that he came home from the coffee house and layed down to rest. He died in his sleep. According to Arion Mavrogeorge, on his way to work he slipped on an icy sidewalk and hit his head. He was carried inconscious to his house and the doctor called. The doctor did not arrive until the afternoon and by that time Demetrios has died.

His body was interred January 21, 1922 Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH, Pine Grove.(127) Demetrios immigrated, 1 Apr 1911. Destination: ManchesterNH.(128) Demetrios is listed on line 8 as Dimitri Varcas; 40 years old; male; married; occupation cultiv.; able to read; able to write; citizen of Turkey, race or people Greek; last permanent residence Mytilene, Turkey; nearest relative or friend in country from when he came - nobody in Mytilene; final destination - Manchester, NH; no ticket to the final destination; had $80; was joining his son Giorgio Varcas, 69 Spruce Str., Manchester, NH; he was 5' 5 1/4" inches tall, brown complexion, gray hair, chestnut eyes; and his birth was indicated as Mytilene, Turkey.

Demetrios's occupation: mill operator Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH, 1922.(129) (See Demetrios Andonios Paspalas for the continuation of this line.)

Persephone immigrated, 1 Apr 1911. Destination: Manchester, NH.(130) Persephone is listed on line 9 as Persefoni Varcas; 40 years old; female; married; occupation wife; able to read; able to write; citizen of Turkey, race or people Greek; last permanent residence Mytilene, Turkey; nearest relative or friend in country from when she came - nobody in Mytilene; final destination - Manchester, NH; no ticket to the final destination; passage was to be paid by her husband; was joining her son Giorgio Varcas, 69 Spruce Str., Manchester, NH; he was 5' tall, brown complexion, fair hair, chestnut eyes; and her birth was indicated as Mytilene, Turkey. Her burial record indicates born 1854 (1951 minus 97 years old) but her tombstone indicates born 1860. A possibility is that there was an error made in transcribing the handwritten information to the form and that she died at the age of 91 not the age of 97. After her husband's death she lived with her children. In the 1942 Watertown MA City Directory she is listed with her son Achilles at 144 Pleasant in Watertown MA. Her son-in-law, Alexander Mavrogeorge, referred to her as Karonia. One of children, George, indicated on his social security application that her name was Persifony Moraitou. This is the only indication of that name.
