She says the tomb contains Edward McClafferty, Edward Ferry, Maurice Ferry, and Edward's father Donal/David Ferry. She says the tomb contains Edward McClafferty, Edward Ferry, Maurice Ferry, and Edward's father Donal/David Ferry. There are several possible Ferry connections in other countries. Australia. A possible relative of David's is on a list from Hyde Park museum in Sydney, Australia of Irish Famine female orphans transported to Australia. This was done under the Earl Gray scheme in which 4,114 young girls in Irish workhouses were sent to Australia where there was a desperate need for their services as domestic workers and prospective wives. On this list is Bridget Ferry from Dunfanaghy, Donegal. At the Rootsweb site (freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/ladyelma.htm) is a list of "Assisted Immigrants to Sydney on the Lady Elma Bruce Arrived 14 July 1859". this lists John and Martha Ferry and their two sons Patrick and John. John is 23, a laborer, from Falcaragh, Co. Donegal. His father is Patrick and his mother is Nancy and they are from Donegal. John can neither read nor write. He has a brother Patrick and sister Catherine "per Sapphire (?)" already in Australia. His wife Martha is 24 and was from Londonderry. Her father is John and her mother who was deceased was Jane. She can read. Patrick is 4 and was born in Newtowncunningham, Donegal. He can read. His little brother John is 2 years old and also was born in Newtowncunningham, Donegal. The family was assisted by the Donegal Relief Fund. Scotland. There is also an interesting entry in the Church of Latter Day Saints' Ancestral File for a David Farrie(Faris) born 1677/1681 in Scotland, christened in Ballymony, Antrim, Ireland. Is there a possible Scottish connection for this family? |

James McGinley married Sarah McGee.1 |
Sarah McGee married James McGinley.1 |
Owen McGee was born on 10 July 1865 at Dunfanaghy, Donegal, IR; however there is a genealogical problem. If we rely on the tombstone, he was born in 1864 (His tombstone says he died 29 December 1932 at age 68. That would be a birth year of 1864.) This is also the date given by Grace Ferry. But according to the entry for him in the International Genealogical Index (transcribed from the Irish birth records) he was born 10 Jul 1865. The possibility exists that there are two different people named Owen McGee/McGhee in this time period and our Owen's parents are not Edward McGhee and Cathrine McFadden. This needs further research and validation.1,2 He is the son of Edward McGhee and Cathrine McFadden. Owen McGee married Sheila (Julia) McNulty, daughter of (?) McNulty, circa 1897.3,4 Owen McGee died on 29 December 1932 at age 67.1,4 He was buried at St. Finian's Cemetery, Falcarragh, Donegal, IR.1 |
Sheila (Julia) McNulty was born in 1879.1,2 She is the daughter of (?) McNulty. Sheila (Julia) McNulty was also known as Julia.1 She married Owen McGee, son of Edward McGhee and Cathrine McFadden, circa 1897.1,3 Sheila (Julia) McNulty lived at Gortohauk, Donegal, Ireland.3 She died on 21 June 1969; At age 90.2,3 She was buried at St. Finian's Cemetery, Falcarragh, Donegal, IR.2 There is a family tradition, related by Sheelah McDaid, that a member of this family went to Alaska and worked in the gold fields. So far this has not been verified, but there are interesting McNulty references in some histories. The "Daly Alta California" of 15 May 1852 (a San Francisco paper) has an item listing the passengers on The Columbia leaving Long Wharf for Panama having on board 120 passengers and $1,836,845 of freight. One of the entries is for Rhodes, Purdy & McNulty $12,800. The McNulty name is also associated with The Pacific Street Wharf Company that was established 22 April 1850 byan Act of the California State Leigslature. This company, in San Francisco, was to construct a wharf at the foot of Pacific street. That location had been leased to them by the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund of San Francisco. There were twelve incorporators, among them M. McNulty. (For more information visit The Maritime Heritage Project at www.maritimeheritage.org.) On July 18, 1897, "The Seattle Daily Times" reported that the day before, the ship Portland had arrived at Seattle with 40 miners aboard carrying about $1,000,000 in gold. Among them is listed Ira McNulty (San Francisco) $21,000. The rush to the Klondyke was on! Mrs. M. L. Ferguson in 1899 compiled a Directory and Gazetteer of the Yukon Territory. She did not finish it but handed over the project to Barnes 7 Baber who published it as "The Only Yukon-Alaska Directory for 1901". This list has four McNulty names on it: McNulty Ed, Council City, miner; McNulty Ed, Nome, miner; McNulty Francis, Nome, attorney; and McNulty James, Council City, miner. |
