Sen. William Bingham1 (M)
b. 8 March 1753, d. 7 February 1804
Pedigree
Last Edited=23 Mar 2003

Sen. William Bingham was born on 8 March 1753.1 He was the son of William Bingham.1 Sen. William Bingham married Ann(e) Willing, daughter of Thomas Willing and Anne McCall, on 26 October 1780.1 Sen. William Bingham died on 7 February 1804 at age 50.1 Senator Bingham was born in Philadelphia and was educated at the Academy and College of Philadelphia (now the University of Philadelphia) in that city. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1768 and his Master of Arts in 1771. In 1778 he was appointed by Congress as Consul to the French West Indian Islands. In the spring of 1780 he returned to Philadelphia and in October of that year married the 16-year-old celebrated beauty Ann Willing, the eldest daughter of Thomas Willing who was one of the most prominent men in that city .The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. William White, one of the chaplains to Congress. For several years he was a member of the legislature of his native state and served as speaker of both houses. In 1784 he and his famous wife went to Europe where they remained for some 5 years. They spent considerable time in Paris being presented at the Court of Louis XVI. Next they visited the Hague and finally England where they were presented at the Court of George III. Returning to America Mr. Bingham served as a United States Senator. He was an ardent supported of the administration of Washington with whom he was on terms of great personal intimacy. In fact he sat at the President's table at the latter's farewell dinner. While the election between Jefferson and Burr was the subject of contest, Mr. Jefferson did not preside, as Vice-President, over the Senate. During his absence Mr. Bingham occupied the chair. Early in 1801, not long after the death of their son Mrs. Bingham returned by sleigh from a party. Exposure to the old brought on a malady soon perceived to be dangerous. A milder climate was recommended and a vessel especially fitted out for her transport to the Bermudas. But the milder climate could produce no benefit and after several months of gradual but sure decline she expired at the age of 37 and lies buried at St. George, Bermuda. Overwhelmed by the death of his beautiful wife, Mr. Bingham retired from public life and went to live in England. He died of a broken heart at Bath and was buried in the Abbey Church. It was not only for his public service and the beauty of his wife that Senator Bingham was noted. He was rated as the wealthiest man in the United States, his estate being valued at three quarters of a million dollars - an immense fortune in those days. He had heavy investment in real estate being said to have owned, at onetime, one-ninth of the state of Maine, including one-half of Mt. Desert Island, over a million acres purchased from the State of Pennsylvania and a large tract in the city of Binghamton, which was named for him. The land in Pennsylvania was bought in conjunction with his father-in-law, Thomas Willing, although title rested in the Senator's name. On his death, his heirs recognized this fact and it is from this source that descendants of Thomas Willing still received inheritance from the estate of William Bingham. Mr. and Mrs. Bingham occupied "The Mansion House" which was modeled after the home of the Duke of Manchester, in Manchester Square, London, but on a larger scale. It stood on the corner of 3rd and Spruce St, the balance of the Square from 4th to Willing's Alley, was taken up with house of Thomas Willing, the William Byrd’s (which was used by Washington as his headquarters during the greater part of the war) and the Samuel Powell’s - all relatives of Mrs. Bingham. The Mansion House was most lavish and replete with works of art and here the Binghams entertained sumptuously, their home being the rendezvous of the distinguished including many noted foreigners whom the French revolution had brought to this country. Mr. Bingham also purchases, at Sheriff's sale for $50,000.00 "Lansdown", the former home of William Penn with its 140 acres. Eventually after his death, this was leas4ed to Joseph Bonaparte, ex-king of Spain and after the house had burned down the property was purchased by certain philanthropists and turned into the present Fairmont Park. Horticultural Hall stands upon the site of the famous mansion where so many prominent people were entertained.1
