Hon. Alexander Baring was the son of Sir Francis Baring.1 Hon. Alexander Baring married Ann Louisa Bingham, daughter of Sen. William Bingham and Ann(e) Willing, in 1798.1 The Barings, for over a century, represented the financial interests of the United States in England. The Rt. Hon. Alexander had been in the United States as a representative of the firm when he met and married Ann Louisa Bingham, daughter of Senator William Bingham. On the death of his father, Sir Francis Baring, Alexander became head of the famous banking house of Baring Bros and was raised to the peerage as Lord Asburton. In 1842 he was appointed as special minister to the United States with full power to settle every question in controversy between the two nations. His grand-daughter had the distinction of being wooed by the Duke of Albany, with the Queen's consent, and later by Prince Leopold. She eventually married Lord Compton.1 Included in the book is the program for Sunday Services 14 August 1960 at The Church of St. John-in-the-Wilderness in Flat Rock, North Carolina. In the program, is this historical sketch. "A South Carolina rice planter, James Heyward, brother of that Thomas who signed the Declaration of Independence, died soon after marrying an English wife, and left her a large fortune. In 1797, Charles Baring, of the well known family of English bankers, married Mr. Heyward's widow. Some years after, into this mountain country came two rice planters, Daniel Blake and Charles Baring, who proceeded to buy land. The Barings settled a fine estate in English style. Their "Mountain Lodge" was built about 1827, and near it, their private chapel, St. John-in-the-Wilderness. The country between Knoxville, Watauga, and Greenville was called the Wilderness. (It was) the only Episcopal Church in Westen North Carolina. In 1836 Mr. Baring gave Bishop Ives a deed to the Church and grounds, which he the next day passed on to the newly formed congregation..... The old English type rural chapel with its beams, arches, and other woodwork of native timbers was designed by E. C. Jones, architect of Charleston, who also supervised its building. in the south wall of the Church may be seen the Baring Memorial tablets.1 |
