Benjamin Rush married Julia Stockton.1 Benjamin Rush was born in 1745 near Bristol, Pa., on a homestead founded by his grandfather who followed Penn from England in 1683.1 He was the son of John Rush and Susan Hall.1 Benjamin Rush died in 1813.1 He was known as the Sydenham of America. After apprenticeship to a Philadelphia doctor he matriculated from Edinburgh and followed this with several years of hospital work in London and Paris. At the age of 24 he set up practice in Philadelphia at once becoming a leading spirit in the political and social life. He was an intimate with Dr. Franklin. In 1776 he was a member of Congress for the State of Pennsylvania and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. He is also noted as an author; for having started, in 1774, the first anti-slavery society in America; as a founder of the Medical College (late absorbed by the University of Pennsylvania); as a teacher. Dr. Rush died of typhus fever following an illness of only five days.1 |
