The family of Ash long resided, in direct line, in Dublin, in the Counties of Covan and Roscommon, in Belfast and at Ashbrook in the County of Londonderry. Of old Anglo Saxon stock, they settled in the Isle of Thanet in the seventh century. In the eleventh century; it appears from documents under the seal of "Ulster King at Arms" and other heraldic authorities, they were possessed of large estates in the County of Devon, the district being still known as Ash. The village of Ash, which it is supposed they founded as their first English abode, remains today in habitable condition and was frequently mentioned in State Papers. It was not until the seventeenth century that the name became known in the North of Ireland. Then, during the Plantation Settlement of Ulster, the family of Ash occupied an important place in the sturring events of that transition and eventful period.1 |
