Also, a death date of 16 Nov. 1661 has been cited. At Stonington, New London, CT. His body was interred at Stonington, New London, CT, at Wequetequick burial ground. A monument has been erected in this old cemetery to the memory of the four founders of Stonington: William Chesebrough, Walter Palmer, Thomas Miner, and Thomas Stanton..1 A Puritan who came from Nottinghamshire, Eng., in 1628; landed in Salem, Mass., and came to Stonington, Conn., in the fall of 1649.

There they joined in the organization of the town of Rehoboth, Massachusetts.
Walter was a prominent man in Massachusetts and was admitted freeman there 18 May 1631, held local offices (constable 1633), and was elected by planters of Rehoboth as first representative of the General Court of Plymouth. He later joined his friend William Chesebrough in Stonington, Connecticut, settling on Wequetequock Cove in 1653. Walter's will was probated at Sothertowne, Suffolk Co., MA, on 11 May 1662.

Richard Stanton was the son of Daniel Stanton. This son in mentioned in the will of Mrs. Ann (Lord) Stanton, his mother. She made her will in 1688 and refers to Richard as "the fatherless child in Barbadoes." This indicates his father's death at a prior date. The only further record of Richard is that his son Richard, Jr., came to Stonington, Conn., 12 Feb 1735-6, and sold his right to certain inherited estates. He probably returned to Barbadoes. In a letter written 14 April 1886 by Judge Richard A. Wheeler, of Stonington, Conn, Judge Wheeler has this to say of Daniel's son Richard: "A portion of the estate of Thomas Stanton, Sen., was set out and assigned to Richard Stanton of Barbadoes. Subsequently this Richard, in 1781, June 11, sells a part of the land so set out to him, describing himself as Richard Stanton of the Parish of St. Phillips in the Island of Barbadoes, Planters, etc. Later, Sept. 5, 1789, he sells the balance of the land to Joseph Denison and then describes himself as of "St. Georges in the Island of Barbadoes." I have somewhere seen it stated that this last deed was given by Richard Stanton, Jr., but cannot just now give my authority." William Stanton believes that these quotations from Judge Wheeler indicate that Richard, son of Daniel, was born at least before 1688; the first of these deeds was dated in 1781 and the second in 1789; and that both of them were given by a Richard Stanton, Jr. He bought property at Stonington, New London, CT, on 6 May 1900.
