MAVROGEORGE Family

First Generation

1. Anastasio1 Mavrogeorge was born about 1840.

He married Anastasia (Stasotha) Mavrogianos. Anastasia was born about 1840. Panayiotis Mavrogeorge says his grandfather came from Mykonos, was born in the 1840's and was the first to settle in Mytilene. But Panayiotis' sisters believe their grandfather was born in Mytilene. The Mykonos ancestry is consistent with the stories of his grandson Alexander Mavrogeorge and other descendants in Mytilene who related that part of Anastasio's success was related to the fact that he was from Mykonos (he was a Greek citizen living in Turkish territory, Mytilene) and he and his family were safe from Turkish confiscation. He was a merchant selling everything from coal to flour to hair, wholesale and retail. He had a reputation for being very fair but firm, and according to family legend, he was the strongest man on the island. The oldest living (1972) grandchild, Thiamandi, does not remember Anastasio and believes he must have died before she was born (1898) or when she was very young. She does remember her grandmother Anastasia. Another persistent family legend is that the family's name was not Mavrogeorge in Mykonos and that there is a relationship to the famous heroine in Mykonos. That legend remains to be explored and verified. In Greek the name is spelled Maypogeopge and the ay is pronounced as if it was the English av.

Anastasio Mavrogeorge and Anastasia (Stasotha) Mavrogianos had the following children:

child 2 i. Marianthi2 Mavrogeorge. She married Georgios Laterna. i0 No issue. Panayiotis Mavrogeorge reported that this man's name was Yialektos.

child + 3 ii. Panayiotis Anastasio Mavrogeorge.

child + 4 iii. Aristidies Anastasio Mavrogeorge was born 1866.
