He married Elizabeth ??. When he was a young man he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was cruelly treated and he deserted. Fearing arrest he assumed the name of Brown. After his marriage he moved from Mass. to Ill., where he was known as John Stanton; rturning to Mass. he was known as John Brown.
