He married Elizabeth Stanton in Preston, New London, CT, 29 November 1774. Elizabeth was born in Preston, New London, CT 8 July 1751. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jabez Stanton and Sarah Morss.

Joseph Cliff and Elizabeth Stanton had the following children:

2 i. Elizabeth² Cliff was born 16 Jul 1775. She married John Prentice 25 December 1791. John was born in Preston, New London, CT 1 Sep 1766. John was the son of Eleazar Prentice and Sarah Stanton. (See John Prentice for the continuation of this line.)

3 ii. Joseph Cliff was born 20 September 1776.

4 iii. William Cliff was born 26 March 1778.

5 iv. Elisha Cliff was born 22 May 1780.

6 v. Sarah Cliff was born 23 January 1782.
