Third Generation

6. Alexander Aristidies3 Mavrogeorge (Aristidies Anastasio2, Anastasio1) was born Mytilene, Lesvos Greece January 2, 1887.(182) Gregge Mavrogeorge's family Bible record says Alex was born 3 January 1888 and on Alex's Social Security application in 1937 he wrote that he was born 2 January 1888. However, in a letter he wrote to Gregge Mavrogeorge in 1963 he says he was born 2 January 1887. The vital records in Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece indicate only that he was born in 1887. Alexander died January 31, 1973 Mytilene, Lesvos Greece.(183)

He married twice. He married Maria Demetriou Varkas in Lesvos, Greece, 4 Jun. 1909.(184) The marriage record has not been found. The parish priest recorded the marriage in the parish ledger. He then sent a notice to the Metropolitan in Mytilene who recorded the marriage again in a ledger book. St. George's church in Loutra does not have any records prior to 1920. Alexander lived with his father at 45 Georgiou Bernardaki and Maria lived with her Aunt at 57 Kyparission. The parish church for those addresses does not have any records in the early 1900's.

The Metropolitan does have the early ledgers but there aren't any marriage entries for 1909. The ledger entries stop 1 Oct. 1905, there is one for 8 Mar. 1910, one for 1911, and then the entries start again in 1912.

The Demarchion's office does not have any record of the marriage in the "demotologiou" (registry book) either. This is not surprising as the Demarchion's records are transcriptions from the ledger kept by the Metropolitan.

Maria was born in Loutra, Lesvos, Greece May 17, 1887.(185) Alexander Mavrogeorge (husband) said she was born 17 May 1887. Greggge Mavrogeorge (son) indicated in his Bible she was born 18 January. Maria was the daughter of Demetrios Andonios Paspalas and Persephone (Karonia) Kledaras.

Maria died March 17, 1961 Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.(186) 3 A.M. Cause of death cardiac arrest, severe septicemia, abdominal decubitis ulcers, and carcinomatosis.

Her body was interred March 21, 1961 Boston, Suffolk Co., MA, Forest Hills. Maria immigrated, 1909. Destination:. The family always celebrated her birthday on the 18th of January and she was the source of the date in the Demetrios (James Gregge) Mavrogeorge Bible. However, her husband indicated she was born 17 May 1887. When she was a young girl she left Loutra and went to live in Mytilene with her Aunt to become a seamstress. She also modeled the Aunt's clothes. A family story talks about her modeling the clothes along the promenade (a walkway along the bay) wearing red shoes. A very daring fashion statement for the period.

He married Maria ??. Maria was born 1901.(187) Maria died 15 Jan. 1973 Mytilene, Lesvos Greece.(188)

Alexander immigrated, 1909. Destination:. He resided in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts 1928.(189) Alexander's occupation: barber in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, 1928. Alexander's occupation: barber in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, 1930. He met his future wife, Maria, a Loutra girl, when she came to Mytilene to live with her Aunt and learn to be a seamstress. The Aunt lived in a building owned by Alex's father. Aristidies did not approve of this match, did not attend their engagement gathering, nor the wedding. Alexander left Mytilene in the 1908/9 period, going first to Alexandria, then to France, and to the U.S. He lived in New York City for a few months. He was in Lynn, MA 1910-11 and reportedly went to Manchester, NH in 1914. In the 1910 City Directory for Manchester, NH appears an advertisement for the New England Cafe "Best of Cooking. Tables reserved for ladies. Regular $3.50 meal tickets only $2.75. Chef from Parker House, Boston." at 22 Manchester Street. It lists the proprietors as the Mavrogeorge Bros. Co. Those brothers were Alfred and Thomas Mavrogeorge living at 590 Elm. At the same address was Arthur Mavrogeorge, a photographer. The next year, 1911 only Arthur and Thomas were listed, now at 1207 Elm and both of them were employed as tailors at the Walter L. Clark & Co., 31 Hanover. In subsequent years only Thomas appears: 1917 through 1924 he was a photographer at 20 Hanover, Room 68. In 1917 he boarded at 50 West Central, 1918 397 Cedar, and 1919-24 at 242 Bell. There isn't any evidence to link these brothers with our Mavrogeorge family. And, there aren't any subsequent listings for them in the directories. Although Thomas and Alex's family were both in Manchester during the period 1915-1924 Alex's descendants are not certain of a family connection. Charles, Alex's oldest son, remembers being introduced to the photographer. He remembers asking his father if they were related and Alex responded that they were distant cousins. Prior to 1915 Alexander does not appear in the Manchester City Directory. In 1915 he is living at 142 Chestnut in Manchester as Aleck Mavrogenis and working as a barber at 162 Chestnut; in 1918 the directory lists them as Alex. and Maria Mavrogiorgis at 115 Spruce, Alex working as a barber at 244 Chestnut. The family then relocated to Norfolk, VA. In 1919 they lived at 920 Waverly Street in Norfolk, Virginia. They returned to Manchester, NH and in 1921-24 were living at 226 Chestnut and in 1925 at 350 Union, Manchester. In 1921 Alex is listed as manager of a barber shop at 69 Central and Mary as barber. From 1922-24 the shop was at 34 West Central, again Alex as manager and Mary as barber. The family then moved to Harrison Avenue in Boston, MA. From 1929-32 there is a James Mavrogeorge, mariner, living at 10 Border in East Boston. There isn't any known connection between him and this family. Then in 1935 the Boston City Directory lists a Thomas and Dispena Mavrogeorge living at 65 Summer in Somerville, MA. They had a variety store at 62 Washington in Charleston. There is no known connection between them and this family. From 1936 to early 1937 the family lived at Cape Cod in North Truro, MA. They then returned to Boston in October 1937 and lived at 14 Noanet Street. After his wife Maria's death he returned to Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece. In the Boston City Directory for 1952 is an entry for George Mavrogeorge and Hilda living at 67 Emerald, George employed as a barber. This is believed to be an error and it actually is Alex Mavrogeorge. Throughout his life he was a barber and is listed as such in the Manchester, NH, Watertown, MA, and Boston MA City Directories. The shops were located in Manchester 1915 162 Chestnut, 1918 244 Chestnut, 1921 69 Central, 1922-25 34 West Central. From 1928-30 he was at 18 Crawford in Watertown. 1937 he was at the Cosmos Barber Shop, 211 Broadway in Boston.
