After his death the following artile appeared in the AHEPA newsletter. "The first President of the Samuel Gridley Howe Chapter was Alexander D. Varkas. Alexander Varkas, was our guiding force, his passing awat last December was a great loss to our Chapter and the entire Hellenic Community. In his memory our Chapter has established the "Alexander D. Varkas Scholarship Fund" from which scxholarship awards will be granted to deserving students. This was done not only to pepetuate his name and to recognize his deeds, but more important, to give inspiration to those who will follow in his footsteps." "It is our hope that this will eventually become a self-sustaining fund. To this, we must rely upon the help and generosity of his friends, and therefore, ask that you participate by favoring the committee with a donation.
