18. Achilles (Archie) Demetrios³ Varkas (Demetrios Andonios² Paspalas, Andonios¹) was born in Loutra, Lesvos, Greece August 18, 1896.⁽³⁰²⁾ Achilles died March 1978.

He married twice. He married Kozinia Kafegelis 1917. Kozinia was born 1900. Kozinia was the daughter of Apostolos Kafegelis and Merope Kliftelis. Kozinia died January 30, 1925 Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH.⁽³⁰³⁾ Her body was interred January 31, 1925 Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH, Pine Grove.⁽³⁰⁴⁾ First appears in the 1922 Manchester City Directory as the wife of Akilaus.

Achilles is listed on line 12 as Achiles Varcas; 12 years old; male; single; child; able to read; able to write; citizen of Turkey, race or people Greek; last permanent residence Mytilene, Turkey; nearest relative or friend in country from when he came - nobody in Mytilene; final destination - Manchester, NH; no ticket to the final destination; passage to be paid by his father; was joining his brother Giorgio Varcas, 69 Spruce Str., Manchester, NH; he was 4' 11" inches tall, brown complexion, chesnut hair, chestnut eyes; and his birth was indicated as Mytilene, Turkey.

In the same year he appears in the Manchester NH City Directory under the name of "Akilaus" rooming at 146 Cedar, Manchester NH. He remained in Manchester, NH until 1925. (In 1922 is the first entry with Akilaus and Kozinia.) From 1925-6 he was in New Jersey and in 1927 moved to Watertown, MA. Member of Taxiarche Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown, MA. According to him, when he came to the U.S. he was fascinated by flush toilets, stoves, and classrooms with heat, desks and bathrooms.
