During the engagement at Black Rock, his brother Eldredge was killed while fighting under his command. At Queenstown Heights, while going to the aid of Lieut-Col. Winfield Scott, Phineas Stanton was severly wounded, and at Lundy's Lane he was captured and held a prisoner for eleven months. During the war he was a Major on the staff, after the war he was placed in command of all the troops of the State militia in Western New York with the rtank of Major-General.¹
