[335] When 14 years old he enlisted in the Colonial Army and served
through the Revolutionary War. He was the body servant of Gen.
Washington for a time. Being captured by the British he was on
of the unfortunates who suffered the horrors of the prison ship
"Jersey", where he caught the small-pox. He, with his fellow
prisoners, were reduced to the necessity of feeding upon vermin
picked from their bodies. After his exchange his brother,
Elisha, visited him and caught the small-pox, loosing thereby
an eye.
